About CarrierLimits
CarrierLimits is a free, neutral calculator and reference for how much carriers must pay when cargo is lost, damaged or delayed, by ocean, air, road and rail, worldwide.
Who publishes it
CarrierLimits is published by Erick Plante. The goal is simple: give shippers, forwarders, buyers and students a quick, honest answer to "what would the carrier actually pay?" with a link to the primary source for every figure.
How we source facts
- Liability limits and deadlines come from the treaty or statute text (UNCITRAL, UNECE, OTIF, ICAO, national legislation sites).
- Ratification status comes from the treaty depositaries: the UN Treaty Collection, ICAO, the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Brussels maritime conventions), CMI status tables and OTIF.
- SDR exchange rates come from the IMF's daily "currency units per SDR" table and are refreshed when the site is rebuilt.
- Where we could not verify a fact from a primary source, the data file says to confirm and the page says so. We do not guess.
Neutrality and money
The site is free. Result pages contain a clearly marked sponsor slot for cargo insurance. There are no sponsors or affiliate links yet. Any future sponsor will be labelled, and sponsorship will never change a figure or a recommendation.
Corrections
Spotted an error or a new ratification? A corrections contact will be published when the site launches. Until then, treat every figure as general information and check the linked source.
General information only, not legal or insurance advice. Limits depend on the contract, the documents issued, declared values, national law and the facts of each case. Check the primary sources and consult a qualified professional before relying on any figure.
