Rotterdam Rules (not in force): liability limits and deadlines

A 'maritime plus' convention covering door-to-door carriage with a sea leg. Listed here because many contracts and articles mention it; it does not currently govern any shipment by force of treaty.

Full name: United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Carriage of Goods Wholly or Partly by Sea, 2008
Status: Not in force: 5 parties; 20 required (UNCITRAL status page)
Mode: Ocean

Carrier's liability limit

Would be 875 SDR per package or 3 SDR per kg, whichever is higher (Art. 59). Not applicable until the Convention enters into force.

Notice, claim and time-bar deadlines

Time bar (if in force)
2 years (Art. 62).

Who it applies to

Nobody yet. Spain ratified in 2011 and notified denunciation of the Hague-Visby instruments to take effect when the Rotterdam Rules enter into force for Spain.

FAQ

Do the Rotterdam Rules apply to my shipment?
